Teachers and parents know that a child's early learning years are critical. Research substantiates that the earlier a child receives positive learning experiences, the more likely that child is to succeed academically.
To meet the requirements of the Reading First and Early Reading First initiatives of the No Child Left Behind Act, all states will soon be required to have Pre-Kindergarten standards for teaching. To help meet this need, McGraw-Hill Education and CTB McGraw-Hill supported the development of the new Pre-Kindergarten Standards for Teaching and Learning.
McGraw-Hill Education and CTB/McGraw-Hill initiated the project to provide a sound and reliable foundation for what three- to five-year-olds should learn in their preschool years. A prestigious panel of national experts in early childhood education developed the standards, and the Carnegie Corporation of New York reviewed the final information.
The Standards offer a known starting point from which educators can make critical instructional and assessment decisions. They can help states, districts, schools, and childcare centers to formulate new policies, standards, and curricula for the growing number of children that participate in a formal Pre-K program.
For more than 75 years, CTB's guiding principle has been to create assessment tools that "help the teacher help the child." We believe the Standards can be a valuable resource to help educators at an important time for our nations' educational system. Providing teachers with quality tools to measure what a child knows will always support and enhance the teaching process and help ensure that no child is left behind.
