The first instrument of its kind, TABE Español helps adult education teachers, employers, and training professionals to effectively plan individual and group instruction. The Spanish-language tests assess basic reading, mathematics, and language skills using content and language appropriate for adults.

TABE Español uses an orientation and structure similar to TABE 7&8. The Spanish edition assesses two basic skill levels: Level E (Easy) tests grade ranges 1.6 to 3.9, and Level M (Medium) tests grade ranges 3.6 to 6.9.

Short Interview Forms and more detailed 20-minute Locator Tests help you determine the appropriate testing level for each examinee. A laminated Word List shows whether the examinee reads well enough to take the Locator Test.

Examiners must be able to read and speak both English and Spanish to administer the tests.

Appropriate Test Language and Culturally Relevant Passages

Spanish-speaking experts developed TABE Español to include positive cultural references and an objectives structure targeted to basic skills instruction in Spanish. Although TABE Español measures the same skills as TABE 7&8, it is not a literal translation of the English test. TABE Español uses standard Spanish and avoids regionalism and ambiguous words. It is appropriate and relevant for students with various dialects, including those from Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Cuba. Developers wrote test passages that positively convey the diverse cultures of native Spanish speakers. Thus, the testing activity engages adults because they feel comfortable with the test content.

TABE Español produces a wide range of highly usable results, including norm-referenced scores and diagnostic scores based on objectives for planning instruction and identifying strengths and needs. Norm-referenced scores include scale scores and grade equivalents based on the same scale as TABE 5&6, and percentile are based on an adult Spanish-speaking population.

Adult Scale Score

A scale score based on the ways adults learn and perform is available in addition to grade equivalents. The adult scale results in a more relevant score. It also makes pre- and post-testing for growth easier to measure because the scaling between levels is smooth.

TABE Español is scored locally either by hand or with TestMate TABE software.

TABE-PC for Computer Administration, Scoring, and Reporting

TABE-PC offers a software version of TABE Español that saves time in administration, scoring, and reporting because it handles everything right on your personal computer. TABE-PC administers tests individually, doing much of the work of the typical test administrator. It provides complete and easy-to-follow instructions, times each subtest, and monitors examinee progress through the subtests. It automatically provides immediate results.
