CTB Fall 2013 Field Test

We are currently recruiting participants for an important field test that begins on October 7, 2013. This is a field test of a new assessment of general education high school equivalency. The assessment is aligned to the Common Core State Standards and incorporates national expectations for College and Career Readiness. It covers Math, Writing, Reading, Science, and Social Studies.

The study is open to high schools, adult education centers, and individuals in three groups:

  • High schools with Grade 12 students (seniors)
  • Adult education centers with clients preparing for the GED
  • Adults who have recently taken the GED or who plan to take the GED in the next year

The purpose of this field test is to figure out which test questions contribute to the quality of the assessment and to conduct research to evaluate the validity of score interpretations. The questions have been developed and published by CTB/McGraw-Hill, a part of McGraw-Hill Education, in line with our vision of helping the teacher help the student.

By participating in this field test study, you will be improving assessments for adult learners who want to have a diploma and pursue their career goals. Participants will also gain valuable insight into the way that high school-level assessments measure the Common Core State Standards.

The test takes about one full workday to complete. High schools and adult education centers may choose to divide the administration into multiple parts to assist scheduling. Individual adult participants will come to a conveniently located testing center to take the test in a one-day session.

We offer generous incentives to qualifying individuals and schools. For more information on our incentives program, click on the
"Incentives" tab below.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is easy for individual adults to participate in the Fall 2013 Field Test. CTB will provide all needed materials, including computer access, scratch paper, and space to take the test. Once you sign-up for the field test, you will receive a confirmation email from CTB. The confirmation email will contain important information about your testing session. Read it carefully and e-mail or call CTB if you have any questions.

Many people have questions as they consider participating in the test. Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions. These questions are for individual adults who will participate in the field test. If you represent a high school or adult education center and have questions about the study, please contact us using the information on the Contact Us tab.

What will I need to bring with me?
On the day of your test, you will need to bring a photo ID and your confirmation ticket (provided by e-mail). We also recommend that you bring a book or magazine to read during breaks, and something to eat for lunch. For security reasons, cell phones will not be allowed inside the testing center.

Can I bring a friend?
We encourage your friend to enroll in the study using the website! If they meet the criteria for the study, be sure to share the registration link (TBA)

Can I just show up?
Individuals must register in advance to test. Unfortunately, anyone who has not registered in advance for the test will not be allowed to participate. We recommend registering as soon as possible, and at least one week in advance of the day you would like to test.

How do I get to the site?
Directions will be e-mailed to you with your confirmation ticket.

What if I am late to the test?
Please plan to arrive at the testing center 30 minutes prior to the beginning of the test. To promote an orderly testing environment, testers who arrive more than 30 minutes after testing has begun will not be admitted to the test center.

How long will I be there?
Our test is designed to last a full business day. Often, testing can conclude more quickly depending on a variety of factors. It is important that all testers take their time and answer questions to their full ability.

What if I need to leave early?
We understand that there are circumstances that may conflict with the test. If you need to leave, you may ask to reschedule your test date, if space is available. Unfortunately, we can only pay incentives to testers who complete the test.

What if I need accommodations?
We offer special accommodations, such as large print, depending on the testing center. Please contact us at sample_acquisition@ctb.com for further assistance.

What if I am not great with using the computer?
Only basic typing skills and the ability to use a mouse is necessary.

Is lunch provided?
Lunch is not provided. However, you will be given 30 minutes for lunch. We will suggest some quick, local food options in your confirmation e-mail if you prefer to purchase lunch near the testing center. You may also bring a lunch, but know that refrigeration options vary by site.

What is the testing schedule like?
The test will include up to five subjects with an ample amount of built in breaks throughout the testing day. There will be 30 minutes for lunch. The proctor will explain the specifics at the beginning of the test.

What if I need to change the date after I received my confirmation?
Please carefully select a testing date for which you are available. If you cannot attend the date you have been confirmed for, please email sample_acquisition@ctb.com and provide your first name, last name, phone number, email address you registered with, and new date you wish to attend. Please request any changes at least 7 days prior to your original testing date. You will receive a second confirmation ticket within 48 hours.

What if something comes up and I cannot attend?
We understand that circumstances occur that may interfere with the test. If you cannot attend after receiving your confirmation, please email sample_acquisition@ctb.com and let us know as soon as possible so that others wishing to test will have the opportunity.
